Perilous Crossing

Just under 100 Times-Standard readers participated in this online poll to document Eureka's most dangerous intersections. While few agreed on just one intersection, more than 40 percent of respondents named intersections along three of Eureka's major arteries: I Street, Harris Street and Myrtle Avenue.

Map settings

West Clark St. and Broadway St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No signs or traffic signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection comes just after a blind turn on Broadway, so turning off onto Clark Street or onto Broadway is very dangerous for pedestrians, bicyclists, or automobile drivers.
W. Wabash Ave. and California St., Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I walk with a cane and cars gun it and buzz me all the time because I'm too slow.
Broadway St. & W. Wabash Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There are no turn arrow lights on Wabash Avenue.
14th St. and E St., Eureka, Calif.
C St. and Buhne St., Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There is no stop sign from Wabash Avenue until you get to Buhne Street. Buhne and C streets are the first stop sign from Wabash Avenue. People don't expect it, so they run it.
California St. and W. Harris St., Eureka, Calif. dog-leg
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, there is a striped intersection.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is dangerous for pedestrians. There is a striped intersection, but it is just after the road dips down so that short people can be completely obscured by the hump in the road.
W. Harris St. and California St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on California Street, but no signals.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection is dangerous for children. While kids are walking to the bus stop at sunrise, drivers on Harris Street are driving into the sun and the crosswalk is after a hump in the road. Also, cars drive too fast to work.
Myrtle St. and West Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This interesection has terrible angles. Pedestrians have to walk a long time to cross the street. Drivers that are turning right at that intersection do not have a good line of sight to see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Vance St. and Herrick Ave. Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: This intersection has a crosswalk.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Nobody stops for pedestrians and people drive too fast. This is a school crossing as well.
Rite Aid to Broadway Mall, Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: People love to walk in the road where it is poorly lit, wearing dark clothing at 12 a.m. I have nearly hit 10 pepole in the last two months.
Buhne & C Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Drivers on C Street fail to stop at the stop sign. There have been multiple accidents at this intersection since we moved to C Street in the past 20 years. The most recent happened about two months ago and it was a very bad accident. A truck ended up on top of car that it hit. Dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians.
Hodgeson and H St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Two-way stop
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection is dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians. There are many car crashes here and many folks walk their dogs in this area. People are avoiding the one way change at Harris Street and cut over via Hodgson Street. They are too impatient to wait a few seconds until it's clear, or they can't see.
Tydd St. and West Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection is dangerous because two streets meet on one side, there is a parking lot on the other side, and on top of that disabled persons, seniors, and more traffic from a new medical clinic.
V St. and Sixth St., Eureka, Calif.
14th St. & I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There is such a long stretch between stop lights that people get going too fast down the road and can't stop in time for the light, or they are not paying attention until it is too late.
101 North, C street and 101 North, M St, 101 south, M STreet and 101 South C street
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: These intersections are dangerous because the homeless and people on drugs are walking without regard to traffic.
West Ave and Myrtle Ave, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The traffic signal too short — 14 seconds long — for an elderly person to cross, or a mom with kids
West Ave. & Myrtle Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Traffic signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Right now, the far right lane is for traffic going straight and turning right and the other two lanes are for left turns, but, only the far left light is for the turners and the two right lights are for straight or right turns. This causes major confusion and I have almost been hit numerous times going straight through the intersection from cars in the middle lane going straight when they should be turning left.
Del Norte and I Streets, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I Street is one way and by that point in the street drivers are going super fast. If you're crossing Del Norte Street to get to H Street, your vision is blocked by cars parked on I Street. You can't see the speeding cars and have to gamble when you cross.
Broadway St, Eureka, Ca
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is a freeway
Fifth Street and Redwood Highway, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The whole of Fourth Street and Fifth Street is a dangerous territory for bikers and pedestrians.
R Street and Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes.
14th Street and F Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No, and no crosswalk
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is an intersection directly on a playground, and there is no crosswalk for children to safely cross. As for H and I streets, people often drive as though they are on a freeway and pay no mind to pedestrians.
7th and I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Traffic signal
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: For some reason, people run the traffic light and hit people coming from the other direction.
myrtle ave. and west ave., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: same
Redwood Highway and S Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop sign
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Drivers cannot see around parked cars to pull across traffic.
Buhne and H St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Lights
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: H and I streets are crazy. I cross H Street to get to the bus stop, and almost get killed everyday by people 'racing' down H and I streets.
Buhne and I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Lights
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: H and I streets are crazy. I cross H Street to get to the bus stop, and almost get killed everyday by people 'racing' down H and I streets.
Harris St. & I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs, no signal
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I have personally been rear-ended in this intersection, and I frequently observe that the signs have been damaged by collisions in the intersection.
Broadway Ave. and 14th Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, signals.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers. A lot of hit-and-runs occur in that area and pedestrials walk out in front of cars constantly.
W. Henderson and Spring St.,Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: A cross walk announcer
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Drivers can't see people crossing as they come over the hill. Most people ignore the cross walk announcer.
Pennsylvania Ave. and Myrtle Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop sign only for the person turning left or right onto the main drag
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: For one, someone has been killed. I used to work at Eureka HealthSPORT and people drive extremely fast on the road that aligns the club. People can barely cross the street without getting hit. There needs to be a four-way stop, or at the very least, lights that light up for the pedestrians like they have by the zoo. It's so dangerous.
Henderson st and Spring st, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs for Spring Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The visibility is terrifying because of how many cars are parked on the streets. The apartment residents think they're allowed to park anywhere, but thats a different problem...
I St and Henderson St, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Some crosswalks and school signs
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There is a lot of pedestrian traffic because of the high school.
14th St and Henderson St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Some crosswalks and school signs
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There is a lot of pedestrian traffic because of the high school.
C Street and Buhne Street, Eureka, CA
Harris and I, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Drivers are confused because the one-way street becomes a two-way street and pedestrians get impatient due to the amount of traffic.
myrtle avenue and S street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I have seen multiple cars run red lights because the timing is too short. I have seen cars still turning and the light turns and they have to go because they are in the middle of the street.
Harris and I, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Merging traffic from a one-way street and a two-way street is dangerous for drivers, pedestrians, and bikes.
Del Norte and H St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on Del Norte Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It can be really hard to see cars coming due to cars parked along H and I streets.
Del Norte and I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on Del Norte Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It can be really hard to see cars coming due to cars parked along H and I streets.
Bhune and H St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: My son was struck by a car making a left turn onto H Street from Bhune Street. He was in the cross walk and was walking with the green light and walk signal. He survived, but received a severe concussion.
Harris and I St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Though there is a stop sign on I street, cross traffic does not stop and there are cars perpetually parked along the side of the road which DRASTICALLY reduces visibility.
Broadway and V St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Pedestrians cross oblivious to cars.
O st. and Trinity, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The kids get out of Eureka High School for lunch and after school. They drive down O Street like "bats out of hell". The street is very narrow and every day they travel at speeds in excess of at least 35 mph. I have never seen a police cruiser patrolling this area during the dangerous "get the hell away from school" period. I have personally almost been run over multiple times getting into my car or sweeping the street gutter.
5th and I Street,Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: While crossing Fifth Street, the drivers turning onto Fifth Street from I Street often do not yield to pedestrians in the sidewalk. Another issue is that drivers will often be in the far right turn lane and turn right onto Fifth Street in any of the lanes when they are supposed to stay in one lane. I have been nearly hit while in the crosswalk on several different occasions because drivers see the green light, but don't put a second thought to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Buhne and I street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: People come from miles around to crash their cars there.
West and Myrtle, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I walk my dogs on a daily basis and I have had numerous close calls at this intersection. Drivers do not seem to want to stop for pedestrians anywhere in this city, but I have had drivers honk at me when I am crossing in the crosswalk at this intersection, as well as cut in front of me with their vehicle when I am crossing.
H Street, Eureka, Calif.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I cannot pick the most dangerous intersection in Eureka because all intersections without traffic signals are dangerous for a pedestrian to cross. All crossings on H and I streets are treacherous unless there's a signal...ditto for 4th and 5th. Broadway is a nightmare; its crosswalks are miles apart.
Del Norte and H Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is dangerous because H street curves a block before it approaches Del Norte Street. The houses along the east side of H Street have only on-street parking, hence there are often so many vehicles parked all the way up to the corner of H and Del Norte streets that cars driving westbound on Del Norte Street cannot see approaching vehicles on H Street due to the on-street parking. Many times I have almost been struck, inching out in order to see around the cars parked on H Street. The city should consider painting the curb red in order to set the on-street parking back 10-20 yards.
5th and I Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Even when a pedestrian has the right of way — green light with green pedestrian crossing sign — cars turning northbound onto U.S. Highway 101 (Fifth Street) from I Street practically run the person over!!!
Myrtle Avenue and West Avenue, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, walk signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There are two main sources of danger at this intersection: 1. TIMING OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS 2. THE FAILURE OF DRIVERS TO HEED ""WALK SIGNALS
___________________________________
Traffic signals fail to allow sufficient time for pedestrians to cross the street. How do I know? I timed it! The WALK sign lasts 7 seconds. It takes anywhere from 15 to 22 seconds to cross the intersections at Myrtle and West. I have always wondered. When the DON'T WALK sign appears when you're half way across the intersection, what are you suppose to do? Stop and get run over?
_____________________
Drivers fail to observe or head the WALK signs. Drivers frequently do not heed the WALK signal which puts any pedestrian at risk of being run over
if he or she relies exclusively on the WALK sign to determine when it's safe to walk. I cannot emphasize that enough.
Do not tell pedestrians that it is safe to walk when the WALK sign appears.
It is a prescription for danger.
They must look first...to watch out for cars who are ignoring the WALK sign...and are entering the intersection...at their risk.
It is a miracle that there are not more accidents in Eureka.
Buhne Street and E Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Eighty percent of bicyclists refuse to come to a full stop. All this does is put the burden on the drivers to be extra on the alert because ""they"" don't want to have to worry about it.
14th St. and West Ave., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: West Avenue is a very, very busy street - so is 14th Street. When the two meet, it can take a *really* long time to turn onto West Avenue from 14th Street. Drivers get impatient and rush their way onto West Avenue and sometimes right in front of other drivers. Couple that with the fact that drivers on West Avenue don't slow down, *and* with the trucks that are always parked along the sidewalk which make it hard to see if anyone's coming, and you have a recipe for disaster.
California Street and Harris Street, eureka, california
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection is most dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers because of visability due to cars and taco vans parked on Harris Street and speeds on Harris Street.
South Broadway, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: A few signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Unsafe shoulders without sidewalks/bike lanes and too much distance between crosswalks results in people frequently crossing against moving traffic.
Highland Avenue and Union Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: A stop sign on Union Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: People driving northbound on Union Street have the right-of-way. The street curves in a way that is dangerous for those on Highland Avenue turning southbound on Union Street, since oncoming traffic is hard to see, especially during daylight hours.
Harris St. and Union St., Eureka, California
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: 1. Drivers northbound from Pine hill have no speed reduction from the beginning of Union Street all of the way to Harris Street. 2. Due to a lack of speed reduction, drivers regularly drive 45-50 mph down the street. 3. There is one crosswalk on Union Street which is on a curve and not lit. 4. At Harris Street, there is an odd intersection which lacks clear visibility. 5. There is a Liquor Store at this intersection. 6. Said liquor store often has large trucks (especially delivery trucks) which block visibility. 7. Harris Street has two lights between Broadway and Union Street. People regularly also travel 40-50 mph here. 8 Southbound on Union Street from Bhune Street people go slower due to speed reduction because of stop signs, but because of the style of the intersection, people consistently run the stop light. 9. There is a parking lot which people use to avoid driving down a block because it is difficult to merge through two lanes to make a left turn northbound. People speed across the two lanes of traffic and into the lot. 10. Lack of visibility at high speeds on curves all of the way up Union Street. 11. There is a large quantity of traffic on this street due to it being the street which has been set aside for handling southbound and northbound diversions to abate traffic on Broadway.
Fourth Street, Eureka, Calif
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Pulling onto Fourth or Fifth streets is very dangerous because you can't see oncoming traffic because on vehicles parked on either street. It is specially dangerous if your trying to see around a large pickup truck.
West Ave and 14th Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop sign on 14th street.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Visibility when turning onto West Avenue is always poor because it is narrow and usually lined with parked cars. A driver has to inch herself well into the southbound lane to see. This is made even more dangerous by the many speeding drivers on West Avenue which is a thoroughfare with few stops. This is also the scenario further down West Avenue at 17th Street, which is particularly scary when you consider the many young people coming from the high school area - new drivers who are still developing their driving instincts. I think visibility issues like this are dangerous for all - drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and pets.
F st. and 12th st., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Constant and dangerous speeding...Dangerous for everyone in the area...
Herrick St. and Vance St., Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No lights or signs, speed signs for school zone
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This is a school zone, down the street from a busy fire station. Traffic is blocked, slow and especially dangerous around the time that children are coming and going to school.
Campton Road and Fern Drive, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection has a blind stretch. Cars cannot be seen coming south on Campton Road. Also combine that with speeding on this stretch of Campton Road. You take your life in your hands when you pull out from Fern Street onto Campton Road and when you slow down to turn left onto Fern Street while driving south you risk being rear ended. There needs to be a three-way stop. I talked to city traffic representatives, but they don't get it. There are a lot of wrecks, but they say there is no problem. You have to pull out on Campton Road to see if anyone's coming out of the blind spot. If there is, then they are confused about if you are going to pull in front of them. It is a really bad situation. No wonder there are a lot of wrecks in Eureka with attitude of city traffic people.
J and Henderson, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on J Street only
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: There are numerous accidents and low visibility to cross Henderson Street due to parked vehicles on Henderson Street.
Myrtle & V Streets, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The visibility along the curve approaching Myrtle Avenue & V Street is not conducive to safe crossing for senior citizens, many of whom are disabled or have mobility issues. Turning traffic, both right-hand and left-hand turners, at the Myrtle Avenue and V Street intersection creates the greatest hazards for non-motorized transit. There's a great deal of traffic at this intersection. This intersection leaves a cyclist no option for staying safely visible to motorized traffic, other than to command a lane, particularly when turning.
Myrtle Ave. at West St., Eureka Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It's dangerous for everyone...I used to bike this way every day and I have seen more near misses and actual accidents here than anywhere else in town. It's the only way to Eureka from Myrtletown and it just gets so congested with traffic in the morning and evenings. The bike lane feels very vulnerable with people roaring past in their huge trucks, swerving into the bike lane to make turns. I don't blame the people I see biking on the sidewalk.
Fifth Street and E Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Cars pull up looking to turn right but only look left. They do not stop before pulling out - pedestrians are a second thought for vehicles making turns.
Del Norte and H Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Many school children cross at this intersection at noon going to a local neighborhood market for snacks.
5th & P, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Traffic moves too fast and drivers do not yield to pedestrians, even in the crosswalk. Druggies and drunks slowly — sometimes almost arrogantly — cross the street. It's only a matter of time.
W Harris St & Fairfield St & Glen St, Eureka, Calif
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Vehicles speeding up Harris Street from Broadway and limited visibility for drivers crossing Harris Street. There are also problems with drivers turning left onto Harris Street from Fairfield versus drivers crossing Harris from Glen to Fairfield.
5th street and B street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on B Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Parked vehicles on Fifth Street block views of oncoming traffic. Auto traffic on Fifth Street travels fast. This is most dangerous for drivers trying to cross Fifth Street from B Street (headed toward Sixth and Seventh streets) but also very dangerous for pedestrians & bicyclists.
Lucas and Harrison, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: A stop sign on Lucas Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: For folks living off of Myrtle Avenue between Harrison Street and Redwood Acres, Lucas is the only street between the two that allows access to westward-heading streets such as Buhne. Thus, Lucas Street get a lot of use from folks like me who live in Myrtletown. Unfortunately, as I pull up to the intersection with Harrison Street, waiting to turn left from Lucas Street onto Harrison Street, I find it impossible most times to get a clear view of the traffic on my left, heading north on Harrison Street. Usually cars are parked so tightly on Harrison Street that I have to pull out way into the street to get even a limited view. Traffic on Harrison Street is usually heavy and often traveling too fast. I feel like I risk my life every time I enter this intersection from Lucas Street. It is so bad that my husband refuses to travel this route, preferring the longer route down around Redwood Acres to Harris Street.
14th Street and West Avenue, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop sign on 14th Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This interesection is mainly dangerous for drivers because of visibility problems. I was on my way to a Kiwanis Club meeting and had a fender bender there, despite being very careful as I pulled out. Many club members mentioned that they never come that way because that intersection in particular is dangerous.
6th Street Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Signs and a few signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: They are two or three lanes, so when a car stops for a pedestrian, many cars zoom around the stopped car to pass nearly hitting pedestrians. This is also a problem on Fourth and Fifth streets obviously, but the speed limit on Sixth and Seventh street is 25 or 30 mph and drivers go a lot faster.
Fourth Street Eureka, Calif.
Clark and Summer, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, there is a stop sign on Clark Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The post office parking lot is one way, with the entrance on Summer. Drivers coming from Broadway or Clark streets must come up Clark, and basically make a U-turn into the post office parking lot. There is a stop sign on Clark but many people do not pay attention to it and just swing into the post office lot with no regard for oncoming traffic. There is also a bus stop on Summer Street right there, so there is a lot of pedestrian traffic in the area. I call this area "Post Office Triangle" like the Bermuda Trianlge, because people seem to leave all the rules of the road behind when they enter this intersection. I have nearly been hit a dozen times, while driving to my place of work on Summer Street. This place is dangerous to drivers and pedestrians alike.
Hawthorne and Broadway Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Hawthorne Street has a stop sign, Broadway traffic does not stop.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Drivers have difficulty making left turns onto Broadway here, and pedestrians cross at great peril. The road is very wide here, leading many to stop in the "suicide lane", or the center turn lane. Often pedestrians waiting to cross may not be seen by motorists in a hurry to catch that one break in traffic to make that quick left turn, thus placing pedestrians in danger who were also waiting for a break in traffic. There is a great deal of foot traffic in the area due to the recycling center, bowling alley, and several motels nearby. There is not a single safe crossing anywhere between Wabash and Henderson. Although there is now a sidewalk on the west side of Broadway where there didn't used to be one, making walking safer there, it doesn't make sense to not have a safe way to cross Broadway at or near Hawthorne.
Henderson & Spring, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: If you are leaving Winco and walking toward Buhne Street you have to cross Henderson Street against traffic. For instance people are looking at traffic coming down Henderson Street and not looking the other way for pedestrians trying to cross the street. In order to get to the cross walk. And people are flying down Henerson Street. I have seen pedestrians hit there and numerous almost accidents.
Walnut and Fern, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop signs on Fern Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Walnut Street is obviously busy, but Fern Street is also. Combine this with three business driveways directly adjacent to the intersection — Murphy's, Babes Pizza, and a gas station — and it can be just about impossible to use the crosswalk across Walnut Street for most the day. Supposedly the county is planning to put a traffic light here, but we have been waiting years for this. Sooner or later someone is going to be killed here.
Union and Henderson, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Stop sign for Union Street
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection is dangerous for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists because the traffic on both streets is heavy at times.
H & Harris, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Poorly designed signals
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This intersection makes driving in Eureka uncomfortable. I dread both of these intersections. They are very confusing to people who aren't familiar with ""kamikaze"" intersections. You find them no place other than Eureka. It is dangerous,
confusing, and ridiculous really. It has never got the attention of the City Public Works Department.
I & Harris, Eureka, Calif.
4th Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Three lanes make these streets dangerous for pedestrians to cross. Cars cannot see the peds.
5th Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Three lanes make these streets dangerous for pedestrians to cross. Cars cannot see the peds.
Harris at Union St, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: It is an off-set intersection, yet lights are times for a regular intersection. When the northbound Union Street traffic gets the green light, traffic from eastbound Harris Street is still going across this part of the intersection. I have also been at this point, getting ready to turn right onto Harris Street and the light turns green and traffic is clear. I have moved my foot over to the gas pedal, and a bicycle will come from the right — from behind the building — and shoot right in front of my car! Fortunately, I have speedy reflexes, and my foot hits the brake before my brain even has time to think, although one time my car and a bicycle came within about 2 inches of meeting.
7th and I, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: Driver speed: Trying to time the lights or beat the lights at an unsafe speed. Reckless, offensive drivers.
5th st. between M Street and A Street, Eureka, Calif.
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: The entire stretch of Fifth street between M and A streets are always a hazard. There are stop lights and crosswalks on most of the cross streets as you travel south on Fifth Street. Pedestrians are constantly walking on the crosswalks with no regard to coming traffic, simply because pedestrians always have the right-of-way when crosswalks are established. It can be very dangerous to walk into a street of traffic, whether or not there is a crosswalk. Pedestrians need to be vigilant, and drivers to be slower. I always try to look at each side of the street corners before moving through an intersection.

Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, two-way stop signs
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: People coming down J Street will run the stop signs, or think it's a four-way stop, I'm not sure. There are many dangerous intersections in Eureka but I work on Seventh and J streets and in one year, I have seen many pedestrian and driver collisions.

Harrison and West, Eureka, Ca
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes, it has traffic signals.
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: I feel this intersection is most dangerous for pedestrians. The cars are in a hurry and often take a right on a red when it is the pedestrian's turn. The crossings are also at an angle. As an individual with poor vision, I have trouble lining up with the opposite curb. Audible pole locators, or crossing tones, are often muffled or impossible to hear with the traffic. The U.S. Highway 101 is especially bad for pedestrians. I have also almost been hit on U.S. 101 crossing in a crosswalk. A car closest to me stopped, but the car coming in the far lane did not, luckly the car that was closest honked thier horn loudly to let me know. Now I cross only with the lights on U.S. 101 and often must walk several blocks to find a lighted intersection to cross with. For blind travelers, crossing can be very difficult as almost none of these crossings have audible signals or locator tones. So one must first know there is a crossing signal and where to find it.

Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: People drive SO fast down Third Street and they don't look for people. I've nearly gotten run over as a pedestrian several times.
A Street and 5th Street, Eureka, Ca
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: No
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: This is the first pedestrian crossing going up north on Fifth Street after the right turn off Broadway going to north. It is a straight away with no lights and people SCREAM up there, looking at the stoplight way ahead and pay absolutely no attention to the pedestrian crossing. If they would just put up a simple yellow ""watch for pedestrains"" sign or something...
I don't want a light there as it is too expenive, but maybe those little lighted strips would be perfect.
Buhne and S, Eureka, Ca
Does this intersection have signs or traffic signals?: Yes
Why do you see this intersection as dangerous?: No left turn lanes on Buhne Street means traffic backs up at busy times and people get agitated and zoom around, while others may be waiting or not have room to go around. This leads to more than one car trying to funnel down the one lane on the opposite side, or impatient people zooming through the intersection. At the same intersection, after school has let out, I see several times in a month, groups of middle schoolers stepping in and out of traffic as a "joke" or pushing their friends or running in front of cars.
