Background: With around 75% of terrestrial wildlife living in the soil a thriving soil food web is vital to the recovery of the majority of farmland wildlife, most of which continues to suffer ongoing declines. Half the farmland at Lower Smite Farm is entering the second year of full organic status (OELS). The farm has five UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) priority habitats including arable field margins, species rich hedge and new meadows. We also have 5 BAP species including skylark, brown hare, great crested newt and slow worm. Rebuilding humus and earthworm populations is a priority and we have planted a wide range of soil improving 'green manure' mixes including, chicory, red clover, cocksfoot, yellow trefoil and white clover to 'feed' the soil and encourage microbial activity. These mixes also provide good forage for cattle and we recently launched a 'wildlife friendly' beef box scheme in partnership with our grazier. We also grow winter and spring cereals, and have recently planted over 1ha of strawberries, blackcurrants and damsons. The lavender bed is entering its 3rd year and we have four bee hives. A neighbouring farming family rents some of the conventional land and their inputs are managed under our auspices (no metaldehyde, methiocarb, insecticides or neo-nicotinoid seed dressings). Another neighbour makes hay for us. We are also in the HLS and visitors will see some of the very new options e.g. temporary herb/legume rich swards, supplementary feeding of wild birds, floristically enhanced margins. Over 5000 children visit the farm every year and Worcestershire Wildlife Trust has over 20,000 members.

Background: A typical Exmoor Hill farm, tenanted now from the National Trust, which has been in the Webber family for 3 generations. We have pasture and graze adjacent moorland - Belted Galloway and Aberdeen Angus beef cattle, and sheep flocks, with a dozen Exmoor ponies helping with grazing the moor . We keep a few Gloucester Old Spot pigs which we took out of organic production 2 years ago - they are still free range. We make our own sausages, Hams and Bacon, and also put some of our lamb and beef through our little butchery - having gone organic 12years ago we have no regrets. We also run a B&B in the farmhouse and have a self catering holiday farm cottage. A highlight of our farming life was winning the SA Organic Producer of the Year 2003 - and also other awards for our farm, conservation, and meat produce. We have recently stopped attending so many Farmers Markets which we did enjoy doing and just attend local events as we can. We take occasional students, farm walks and enjoy school visits.

Background: Tamarisk Farm is 600 acres of mixed organic farming on the clay slope running down to the sea behind the chesil beach on the Jurassic coast of West Dorset. Most of the land is low fertility permanent pasture and scrub, divided by broad hedges. The farm began growing organic vegetables in 1960 with the home farm becoming fully certified in the 1970s and additions converted in the 1990s. We keep a herd of pedigree Ruby Red cattle and a flock of Dorset Down sheep as well as small flocks of Hebrideans, Shetlands and Jacobs, all predominantly grass fed on permanent pastures. The arable rotation relies heavily on red clover for fertility, producing Maris Widgeon wheat and rye for milling and some second cereal for feed. Flour, meat and vegetables are sold both wholesale and through the farm shop, as well as new lines in sheepskins and organic knitting yarns - all from our own sheep. The whole farm has been in Countryside Stewardship for two decades and is now in HLS, and this is a major income enabling us to farm very extensively (some might say inefficiently!) to maintain and develop the conservation value which is our passion. This includes a range of rare and uncommon arable weeds and wildflowers (with nine species of orchids), diverse small mammals and birds and great crested newts and dragonflies. We try to sell ourselves under the banner "Farming and wildlife side-by-side", producing good wholesome food without compromising the quality of the environment.

Background: We are already advertised as a S A education walk farm, with a leaflet prepared by Rupert Aker. The farm is 160 acres, all in HLS. We farm a beef suckler herd and some winter field vegetables. We are into the second year of developing a 1.5 acre forest garden together with a further 1.5 acres of alley cropping. The last few years I have been actively trying to make our hedges more productive by adding trees suitable for coppicing for logs and we are also planting trees for fruit production in the hedgerows and moving the fences 2 metres out from the hedges. We also planted a new 200 metre hedge just with trees which have either an edible or medicinal uses, finally we planted a small nut orchard in 2010. These elements are for our own interest and also used for inovative based farm walks.

Background: Sheffield Organic Growers is a cluster of four independent organic vegetable and fruit growers, operating under a Soil Association Collective License. One grower is a community-led CSA, the others supply produce to their own box schemes and to other local outlets. Infrastructure, equipment and other resources are shared but each grower makes their own business decisions about what to grow and how to market their produce. This model enables growers to start in business without needing much capital, and as each grower can learn from and help each other, it is a more co-operative and positive way of working!

The farm places a tremendous emphasis on getting people out, onto the land, holding 150 educational visits a year. An innovate relationship with OrganicARTS, a charity based on site, helps the farm realise its aspirations as an educational and community hub. Together the farm and OrganicARTS also hold a number of open days throughout the course of the year to increase local knowledge of food and farming.
