A year of benefit fraud convictions in NI

This map was compiled by The Detail using information provided by the Department for Social Development in response to a Freedom of Information request. The map gives a postcode breakdown of benefit fraud convictions in Northern Ireland from September 1 2011 to September 1 2012. The postcode data relates to people's addresses at the time of their conviction. In some districts, there were no benefit fraud convictions during the year covered by our request. The map does not include two cases involving people living outside of Northern Ireland when convicted and one other case was omitted due to an error in its postcode details. A total of £4.5m was fraudulently claimed in benefits related to these convictions. However, the total level of benefit fraud estimated to be in the system in 2011 was £19m.
