This map shows calls to the city of Durham's 911 center from March 25, 2010, through March 25, 2011, to report the sound of gunfire.
Once we stripped out false alarms, canceled calls and officers' calls for backup, there were 1,834 calls over 363 days to locations in the city. There were about 400 calls from multiple people reporting the same incidents.
On average, Durham 911 received five calls per day reporting the sound of gunshots, or perhaps something mistaken for them.
There were nine days on which no reports were made: in 2010, Aug. 8, Aug. 23, Aug. 29, Sept. 8, Dec. 9, Dec. 15; in 2011, Jan. 5, Feb. 22 and March 11.
